FROM SCREENINGS TO ACTION

Kalamazoo Great Start logoThe Kalamazoo County, MI, Great Start Collaborative together with the United Way's Strong Families/Safe Children program is running a campaign of community screenings to develop a strategy and menu of action steps for health equity.

Thirty representatives of diverse groups attended the initial viewing and quickly volunteered to host their own UNNATURAL CAUSES screening events. For example, the intermediate school districts' Inclusion and Diversity Division is organizing screenings for district administrators and teachers.

In early 2009, key players from different sectors will come together for a community summit to develop a countywide health equity action plan.

Community members have already identified zoning legislation as an immediate focus for action.
